We’re always fine-tuning how we run and organize Dystopia Rising New York. Before you sign-up for shifts on the database, it’s important to know what options are available… particularly if you take advantage of our Early-Bird tickets. Generally, we want to reward people who sign up early, as it helps us prepare for the event better. We also want to make sure that we’re fair and transparent with how we handle our shifts and clean-ups. Please review this short announcement for information on NPC shifts, Early Clean-Up and Early Set-Up.
NPC Shifts
As more people pre-register, the more our NPC shifts fill and expand. While we’re thrilled to see the game growing, we need to come up with a policy to ensure we have the right number of people on shift, and reward people who sign up early. To accommodate this, we have a form that people who are pre-registered can use to change their shifts. As new shifts open up, we’ll review these requests to back-fill shifts before we open them up to new check-ins in the database. For example, if we have space on Saturday from 4 to 6 pm, and we have someone checked in who would prefer that shift over working Saturday 10 to midnight, we’ll move that person to the day shift, and open up another spot for Saturday 10 to midnight. The short version - check-in early to get your best pick of NPC shift.
Early Set-Up
Starting in June, we’re offering a new four-hour NPC shift… Early Set-Up. You’ll have to arrive on site by 1 pm and work until 5 pm emptying storage, setting up Ops, and putting up props in the morgue and the Great Hall. This counts as your NPC shift for the game. There are only a limited number of spots, and we do require you to be able to lift up to 50 pounds to take part in this shift: it’s needed for the work required. As always, you can volunteer for Early Set-Up for CAPs and first pick of bunk, but it will only count as your NPC shift you select it in the database.
Early Clean-Up
We’re continuing a policy we developed where if you need Early Clean-Up, you’ll have three options:
We will post two Early Clean-Up shifts on the database. Typically these will be Saturday evening (about 5 pm) and Sunday morning (10 am). If you request Early Clean-Up, expect to take one of these two options.
If you do a Day Pass, you’ll have your own Early Clean-Up option at the end of your pass. Just go ahead and select that one; you don’t need to ask permission.
If you can’t make either of the Early Clean-Up shifts, then we will ask you to do two extra hours of NPC. You can also always volunteer to do the extra two hours of NPC. You’ll be able to choose any shift you like.
Note: there’s no way in the database to deconflict the Saturday 4 - 6 pm NPC shift and the Saturday Early Clean-Up option. If you select Saturday Early Clean-Up and the Saturday 4 - 6 pm shift, we’ll remove you from the NPC shift and place you on a later shift Saturday night (so don’t do it).
Thanks, and see you in the apocalypse!
